Jonathan Karp, Publisher and Editor

Jonathan Karp
Publisher and Editor

“Simon Six is an example of what I love most about the publishing business—finding, editing, and being a champion for all kinds of authors: novelists, journalists, thinkers, artists, historians, futurists, philosophers, humorists, experts, leaders, and anyone else with a unique perspective or a great story to tell.

As the founding publisher of Twelve, I published one book per month for the Hachette Book Group. For Simon Six, I will acquire and edit half as many books each year and publish them with twice as much emphasis.

What am I looking to publish? Some of the best books I’ve worked on have been about things I knew little or nothing about, so I’m especially interested in authors who will enlighten me while intriguing me.  Like many editors, I want to help put books into the world that expand our understanding, challenge orthodoxies, and are useful, artful, and irresistibly interesting.

Simon Six titles will be published in partnership with the teams at various Simon & Schuster imprints, to be determined on a book-by-book basis. My hope for Simon Six is that this imprimatur will signal to readers that these are books of quality, singularity, and relevance.

After thirty-six years, editing more than 200 books and overseeing the publication of at least 1,000 others, I’m looking for six more each year that will enlarge the lives of readers and are worthy of exhortation.”

Simon Six is what I love most about the publishing business – finding, editing, and being a champion for all kinds of authors:  journalists, novelists, thinkers, artists, and leaders.

As Publisher and Editor-in-Chief at Twelve (Hachette), I published one book per month, half of which were New York Times bestsellers. As Editorial Director of Simon Six, I will publish half as many books with twice as much emphasis.

Some of the best books I’ve worked on have been about things I knew little or nothing about. Like many readers, I am unpredictable—sometimes looking for new insights and sometimes looking for great entertainment. Like many editors, I want to help put books into the world that expand our understanding, challenge orthodoxies, and are useful, artful, and irresistibly interesting.

I’ll edit everything myself and partner with the teams at various Simon & Schuster imprints, to be determined on a book-by-book basis. My hope for Simon Six is that this imprimatur will signal to readers that these are books of quality, singularity, and relevance.

After 36 years, editing more than 200 books and overseeing the publication of at least 1,000 others, I’m looking for six more each year that will enlarge the lives of readers and are worthy of exhortation.
